What’s the best way to introduce new concepts in the classroom? The “I do, we do, you do” model, also known as the Gradual Release of Responsibility model, is popular among educators—and with good reason! 

If you’re familiar with the GRR model, you know how valuable it is in encouraging students to be confident, independent learners. It involves three foundational steps: 

I do: Teachers present concepts and model the process of applying those concepts. 
We do: Teachers and students work through examples together. 
You do: Students work independently to show their understanding. 

When implemented successfully, the GRR model is a wonderful way to ensure all students have the information they need to master new concepts. It can, however, be difficult to execute without the proper resources.

Step #1: I do

In the first step of the GRR model, the teacher presents concepts and models the problem-solving process. There’s no need for students to apply their knowledge just yet. Instead, they use this time to take notes and gather the necessary information they’ll need to later apply those concepts independently.

Step #2: We do 

In the second step of the GRR model, students are now ready to work through examples with instructional support. This step is crucial—shared instruction is key to building students’ confidence, and allows the teacher to check for understanding and provide reinforcement.

Students will have the opportunity to answer the same question in real-time, while you see how students answered the question and whether or not they understand the concept.

Change difficulty level: You can choose the difficulty level of each question to provide additional challenge or continue building students’ confidence at an easier level. 
Answer explanation: Present the answer explanation included on the review page, or have students reinforce their understanding by explaining the process to the class.  
Small group time: Based on their answers, easily determine which students are ready to move on to independent study and which students need additional support and reteaching. 

Step #3: You do

In the final step of the GRR model, it’s time for students to work through questions independently. It’s natural for students to meet roadblocks at this stage. Without the right tools, you may not realize students are struggling until after class has ended. To ensure they’re getting the most out of their independent practice, it’s helpful to keep a close eye and provide support when needed.
